.web is in the root zone, but launch dates are not yet published

By George Morina · News · 22 October 2026

After a dispute lasting about ten years, .web is now in the internet's root zone with Verisign as its registry operator. Names are not on sale yet.

What happened

On 22 July 2026 Verisign announced that .web had been delegated. .web was one of the strings applied for in ICANN's 2012 round of new top-level domains, and its allocation had been contested for years. Verisign said the disputes had been resolved and that the details are confidential.

ICANN's registry agreement for .web is dated 22 July 2026, and IANA published its delegation report on 23 July 2026.

When can you register a .web?

Verisign said it plans to offer .web through registrars "later this year" and would share launch details in the coming months. As of 22 October 2026 we have not found official sunrise or general availability dates from Verisign. New domain extensions usually open first to trade mark holders (a "sunrise" period) before general registration, but the .web timetable has not been confirmed.

Be careful with "pre-registration" offers. Until the registry publishes its launch plan, no one can guarantee you a particular .web name.

We will update this article when Verisign publishes dates.
